American democracy was built on principles so fundamental they were once beyond debate. Free expression. Human dignity. Equal application of the law. Independent institutions.

We are professionals who hold different political views but share a common conviction: these principles are the foundation of a healthy democracy and a thriving economy.

At a time when partisan disagreements threaten to overwhelm our shared values, we affirm our commitment to the following:

Free expression. The right to speak, to dissent, to publish, and to protest is not a privilege that those in power may revoke. It is a constitutional guarantee.

Human dignity. A free society depends on recognizing the inherent worth of every person.

Rule of law. The law must apply equally to everyone. Government cannot be used to reward allies or punish opponents.

Democratic integrity. Free and fair elections, the peaceful transition of authority, and accurate and transparent communication by elected leaders are the mechanisms that prevent abuse of power.

Independent institutions. Courts, a free press, universities, and civil society exist to check power, not to serve it. Their independence is a requirement of legitimate governance.

What professionals say β€” and don't say β€” in this moment helps normalize abuses of power. We pledge to use our professional influence, our platforms, and our voices to uphold these principles.

We call on every professional, business leader, and institution to do the same.

Stand with us. Be ALERT.
